Computer Lab Activities

Guided Reading/Computer Lab Time:

comp&kids

Each grade level is assigned a lab time during guided reading. Students from each grade level will come to the lab and work on their individual Chromebook under the supervision of the tech person. They will do reading and/or math activities, and coding. On some occasions, they will work on special projects. Third and fourth graders will be introduced to typing and practice their skills.

Since computer time is scheduled during guided reading, the classroom teacher works with the remaining smaller group of students in the classroom. The nature of the work directed by the classroom teacher is personalized, small group instruction, which is specifically tailored to the needs of each student.

Half way through the session, the groups switch so that each group has an opportunity to receive direct small group instruction from the teacher, and also to participate in computer activities. Access to the lab is scheduled so that every class has an equal opportunity to access the technology available in the lab.

Teachers are encouraged to use the lab during reading and math times to enhance the number of differentiated instruction options they can provide for their students.  There are also times available for sign-up so that use of the lab is integrated fully as part of classroom goals.

Coding in the Computer Lab:

The website Code.org is used and the students are guided through problem-solving activities based on their grade level.

About our Technology:

All students in grades K - 4 are given a Chromebook for use at school and at home, when required. If there are any issues with their technology, students (or their parents) can put in a help ticket. Students are welcome to see the computer lab teacher for assistance also.
